Obviously, the past few years Hollywood has decided that they can take a good movie and turn it great with some ex-disney faces and cgi out the wazoo. Most turn out to be terrible, some okay, and a handful actually turn out better than the originals. I don't count Scarface as one of those, as so few people even knew of the early century original.
For me, it would be Nightmare on Elm Street. Even though it was labeled a re-imagining. But it brought back everything I missed from the series. It was not chock full of corny one-liners or death scenes that were ludicrous in nature, even if cute on film.

Nightmare was ok, but they really should have made Freddy look like a real burn victim (they tested it, but felt it was too disturbing).
I think the best remake, and superior to the original, is The Fly. Cronenberg took a goofy oldschool horror movie and made a damn fine sci-fi movie.
The Dawn of the Dead and Blob remakes are both excellent.

I never saw the original Fly, so all i can say is that Cronenberg is the end all, be all.
I would say Carpenter's The Thing.
Just a perfect movie IMO.

Wow, Rob. You may be the first person I've ever met who dug the remake. I loathed it. I liked the fact that Freddy was the way he was in the first one, and the acting is improved, but so much of it just reeked. I mean, take the part where Freddy comes out of the wall as Nancy is sleeping, it looked TERRIBLE. They should have never tried to remake the death scenes, and instead come up with their own. But that's just me.
I loved the Friday The 13th remake, although honestly, it wasn't a remake. Just another chapter. But I loved it.
I like the Texas Chainsaw remake more than the original. I mean, any film with R. Lee is alright with me. Well, except for Saving Silverman.
Let Me In, the remake of Let The Right One In was fantastic too.

Friday the 13th was interesting because it was basically a remake of parts 1-3. I also like the the first TCM remake but the prequel sucked.
The Thing is another that is superior to the original.

Anyone see the 2011 The Thing?
It's alright, and it's a remake alright, but a remake of the original. The ending is cool because it's the beginning of John Carpenter's The Thing. So, they get points for that. But the CGI monster looked like absolute shit.

3:10 to Yuma is a great remake. Im not a big western guy and I never considered myself a Russell Crowe fan but this flick kept my interest the whole time. The acting was top notch.
The Fly mentioned above is also great and still holds up really good.

I haven't seen the movie The Departed was based on, but I love that movie so much, I have to choose that.
Also, Cape Fear

The Departed is actually based on three films. And I agree, The Departed is so unbeliveably fantastic, although I could have done without the Dicaprio affair with Damon's girl. I always fast forward through their bits when I watch it.
Man, Cape Fear is awesome. I've been watching it on HBO lately, and just recently I thought "DeNiro deserved the Oscar. There's nothing that came out where a performance could beat this. People are idi---ah crap. Silence of the Lambs"

No, it's a remake of the original one from the 50's. The one from the 50's is where they discover the creature, and the one from the 80's is where it shows up at their place. So, this one is a remake of the 50's.
