For me, without a doubt, is The Slavers from The Punisher: MAX.
The Punisher takes on the absolute scum of the Earth, human traffickers. I've read the graphic novel so many times, and enjoy just as much each time. I never tire of seeing all the things The Punisher does to the main figures of the trafficking ring. It's gorgeous.

I actually liked Year One more than The Dark Knight Returns, but I get where you are coming from.
My favorite story is John Byrne's "Trial of Galactus" from Fantastic Four #242-244 and #257-262. His establishment of Galactus as a universal force is interesting (and probably light years away from how Kirby and Lee envisioned him) and the concept of a survivor's fleet is brilliant. I love the battle between the FF, Silver Surfer, Dr. Doom, and Tyros; and the scene in #243 when Galactus is about to hit the switch to devour the planet, and Thor nails him with his hammer, yelling "I SAY THE NAY!" is fucking incredible!

I love Year One, but IMO DKR is better for repeat readings.
I really enjoyed Supreme Power. Awesome universe, but it went to crap once it became Squadron.

When I was younger there was a series called "What if?" that took big stories and turned them around. I read the ones I could find, but I remember being enthralled by them.

I really wish that they would collect What If? in the Essentials format. Their color TPB prices are insane now.

There are several stories in the Batman Black and White comics that were really good. One was a crook going around Gotham on Christmas Eve dressed as Santa and stealing gifts. Bats beats the crap out of him and then dresses as Santa to put all the gifts back.

I'm going with a three-way tie between All-Star Superman, Superman: Red Son and Kingdom Come.

Red Son is the best elseworlds style story ever. I need to read Kingdom Come again, it really confused me when it first came out but then I knew like 5% of what I know now about DC.

I just pulled Kingdom Come off my shelf whilst taking a dump today. I first read it about 6 years ago. So it def feels fresh.
