Instead of being so negative on some threads, let's have a positive thread where we can find out some good advice/tips.
One thing I always do whenever I check into a hotel is the $20 sandwich tip. It usually works in Vegas but I have done it in Atlanta and New York hotels. When the cashier asks for driver's license and credit card, I put a $20 in between the two. I then ask "Are there any complimentary upgrade available." I have done this about 10 times and 9 times it has worked. last time (around christmas), I went from the lowest room at the mirage to a strip view room that is the next level up. When i saw online what the price difference would have been, it was about $50 a night. The highest jump I have gotten was a bare basic room at the paris in vegas to a suite with a great view of the bellagio fountains. Price difference was about 150 a night. I first heard about it from a friend of mine who used to work the front desk at an LA hotel and says that customers rarely do it but it almost always works. he usually saw someone do it about once a month.

Not a bad idea, especially considering how freaking expensive hotels are.
The only real tip or trick I have is one you guys probably won't even care about, but here it goes. OK, with dish soap, what I did was buy two bottles of the same product. Then I dumped one out into an empty container, and left a small amount inside. Then I added water, and shook it up. So now that's my dish soap. One drop will create a monster lather, and a bottle last about 10 times longer.
An odd tip coming from me, I'm sure, but I felt so MacGyver coming up with it.

Easy way to sharpen scissors.
Take a beer bottle and "cut" it with the scissors. Go for the fat part since it is even and just go back and forth a few times.
