This guy will flop big time. It will be even worse than Tensai last year. When you reintroduce a new guy when the last time people really saw him was 8 months ago and he hasn't really changed all that much, then you need to either do vignettes and completely change his look. OOOHHHH he grew a longer beard, big whoop. A good example of this is husky harris/bray wyatt who completely changed his look and character to the fact that he is unrecognizable from husky harris. Dolph Ziggler is another classic example of this. A good historical example is goldust.
A good backstory would have been that since Punk and Brock are out for awhile that Heyman is looking for the next big thing. (BTW wasn't vince going to fire him?) You see him scout certain matches for a few weeks. While this is going on you have Axel go on a bit of a winning streak against top competition like him defeating Orton, Barrett, Caesaro, R-Truth, etc. Then Heyman announces him as his next client and that he will take him to the next level.
One other option is for Axel to go on his winning streak against steadily better competition each week (instead of facing HHH and cena immediately) for like 2 months until he gets to cena. This way the announcers can play up the fact that with Heyman, that he is getting better and better as a wrestler.

Good point though I'd argue Ziggler isn't a great example. The "Hi my name is Dolph Ziggler" gimmick was almost as bad as the cheerleader.
I would have had Heyman pass McGillicuty after a loss and lay into him, saying he was a disgrace and that it is good he uses a fake name because he is trashing his legacy.
Then have McGillicuty get pissed and get a few upsets. THEN he starts doing the Mr. Perfect vignettes or something similar. A up close and personal interview with Cole saying how he wasn't confident enough to use his family name. THEN he comes back as Joe Hennig. I get the Curtis Axel connection, but it still sounds like one of the dumbass generic names creative is constantly churning out.

I find their way of trying to get him over interesting, just not that smart. People don't see him beating John Cena via DQ as anything. He'd get infinitely more over if he just lasted 10 minutes with him.
